OVERVIEW:

The application of linked data concepts and technologies promises great benefits for the retrieval and access of library and cultural heritage resources, but requires new ways of thinking by professionals and end-users. This presentation will use linked data examples from RDA: resource description and access, and will discuss:

  • A basic introduction to data structures: triples, chains, and clusters
  • What is a linked data record?
  • Global, multilingual linked data
  • Linking data from multiple sources
  • The Semantic Web: a paradigm shift?

Gordon Dunsire

Independent Consultant

 

 Read a short biography of Gordon Dunsire. Gordon Dunsire is an independent consultant living in Edinburgh. He is Chair of the RDA Steering Committee and a member of IFLA’s Cataloguing Section, FRBR Review Group, ISBD Review Group, and Linked Data Technical Advisory Committee. He is a member of the Cataloguing and Indexing Group as the representative from CIG Scotland. He is a developer of the RDA Registry and IFLA namespaces for linked data versions of the RDA, FRBR, ISBD, and UNIMARC bibliographic standards. He publishes and presents at international level, and is co-author of Bibliographic information organization in the Semantic Web.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

A better understanding of linked data concepts and their application to bibliographic information retrieval, and the potential impact on users and cataloguers. 

Subject level and previous knowledge required:

Introductory and non-intensive, no previous knowledge or experience required.
