Seminars and Student Workshops

Seminars

In consultation with its community, UKSG focuses on delivering content that covers both best practice and industry standards. UKSG is an authoritative source of training, delivering sessions with experienced speakers working within the sector.

Seminars range from introductory-level events designed for those new to the information community, to intermediate and advanced seminars and workshops on specific themes relevant to members’ professional development needs. Some delegates choose to attend certain courses more than once to remain up-to-date.  You can see a list of our forthcoming events here and register your interest for more information.

Seminars can also be customised and delivered in-house on request.

“The presenters were excellent. They were able to explain some quite technical concepts in a very accessible way.”

UKSG offers a range of training events which address core issues including:

Some courses are offered occasionally and may cover subjects such as Financial Planning, Open Access, Practical Project Management and RDA. Details of such events will appear on the Schedule of Events when available.

Student Workshops

UKSG maintains strong links with those Universities offering library and information studies courses and is always pleased to organise free Student Workshops for undergraduates and postgraduates, revolving around the various facets of the scholarly information industry. Typically these workshops are run by a library practitioner co-presenting with an academic tutor so that the session addresses both day-to-day work and broader themes. The workshops generally cover:

  • the publishing process
  • the range of services offered by the subscription agent and other intermediaries
  • the librarian’s role in journals and e-resource management

“Good to hear from practitioners who are aware of issues from different perspectives – publishers, librarians and educators.”

Previous workshops have taken place at:

  • Manchester Metropolitan University
  • University of Sheffield
  • University College London

Please contact the Chair of the Education and Events Subcommittee, Anna Franca, for further information on setting up or participating in a UKSG Student Workshop.
