Portico, the digital preservation service, has announced a pilot project to safeguard underrepresented and at-risk archival content. Recognizing the inadequate representation of certain communities, topics, and materials in traditional publishing and archival collections, this initiative seeks to ensure the longevity of such valuable resources for future educational and research purposes.
The project focuses on key areas, including building community trust, addressing digital preservation challenges across various formats, managing rights and privacy concerns, and developing efficient, scalable systems for long-term content care.
Portico has partnered with several organizations for the pilot, including:
• Ozarks Afro-American Heritage Museum Online
• Bracero History Archive
• Pilbara Aboriginal Strike
• Against All Odds – The First Black Legislators in Mississippi
• Emmett Till Memory Project
• Digital Transgender Archive
• Invisible Histories Project
The initiative reflects Portico’s dedication to amplifying under-represented voices and preserving their histories with respect and long-term commitment. To learn more, readers can explore articles about the project in Library Journal and JSTOR Daily.
Portico invites suggestions for additional partners to expand the initiative’s reach and impact. For more information, visit their official website or reach out to the project team.
