OVERVIEW:

The speakers from INASP will discuss INASP’s role in  access to, production and use of research information.

  • Access: Why access is important, what INASP does, what publishers do/can do
  • Production: Research writing and local publishing support for Southern journals
  • Use: Taking research to policy and practice

The publisher representative from Ubiquity Press will then outline Ubiquity’s work with Southern journals.

Finally, the Coordinator of HIFA (Healthcare Information For All) will discuss access to and production of healthcare information specifically and the use of health research and journals by frontline workers.

 Read a short biography of Anne Powell. Anne is responsible for developing and implementing INASP’s information access work. She manages INASP’s access activities, supporting libraries and consortia with access to and use of e-resources. Anne leads INASP’s work with publishers offering access to their online research literature. Anne holds a Master’s degree in library science (University of British Columbia) and, prior to joining INASP, worked as a librarian and library educator in Zimbabwe for 21 years.
 Read a short biography of Ruth Bottomley. Ruth leads the Research Development and Support team who work to improve the communication and accessibility of developing country research through capacity building support to individuals and institutions and through the publication of local online journals. Ruth joined INASP at the end of 2014 after 20 years working overseas, primarily in Southeast Asia. She has worked both as a researcher and development practitioner and has written and published on aid and development issues.
 Read a short biography of Neil Pakenham-Walsh. Neil Pakenham-Walsh is the coordinator of the HIFA2015 campaign, co-director of the Global Healthcare Information Network, and current chair of the Dgroups Foundation. He started his career as a hospital doctor in the UK, and has clinical experience in rural Ecuador and Peru. For the last 20 years he has been committed to the global challenge of improving the availability and use of relevant, reliable healthcare information for health workers and citizens in low- and middle-income countries. He is particularly interested in the potential of inclusive, interdisciplinary communication platforms to help address global health and international development challenges. He has worked with the World Health Organization, the Wellcome Trust, Medicine Digest and INASP (International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications). He is based near Oxford, UK.
 Read a short biography of Tom Mowlam. Tom Mowlam is Director of Operations at Ubiquity Press, a researcher-led open access publisher, and provider of publishing services to university presses and institutions around the world. Previously Tom was Production Director at BioMed Central.
