World Digital Preservation Day 2019
This year's World Digital Preservation Day, when individuals and institutions from across the globe will join in a celebration of their work in the field of digital preservation, will be held on 7 November. Organised by the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) and supported by digital preservation networks in all five continents, World Digital Preservation Day is open to participation across all sectors and geographic locations.
Highlights of the day will include the publication of a new edition of the Bit List of Digitally Endangered Species. First published by the DPC on World Digital Preservation Day in 2017, the Bit List is a crowd-sourcing exercise to discover which digital materials are thought to be most at risk.
“This year the theme for World Digital Preservation Day will be 'At-Risk Digital Materials',” said Head of Advocacy and Communications for the DPC, Sarah Middleton. “Linked to the new edition of the BitList we have planned, we think World Digital Preservation Day is a great way of raising awareness of some of the digital objects, formats, media, software and real life environments which could be affected by data loss . . . as well as what we are doing about it!”
National Archives of Australia
The National Archives of Australia has become the DPC's newest Associate member.
Collecting and preserving Australian Government records which reflect the country’s history and identity, the National Archives of Australia (NAA) is in a period of digital transformation. As part of this NAA is leading a whole-of-government approach to digital information governance that will take full effect in 2020, and are undertaking a phased, multi-year programme to modernise its capabilities to embed secure digital end-to-end archival processes.
“The National Archives of Australia is excited to be joining a community dedicated to the preservation of, and increased citizen access to digital records,” said Carey Garvie, Assistant Director of Data Governance and Analytics, for the National Archives of Australia’s Digital Archives Taskforce. “We look forward to connecting and collaborating with other DPC members to grow our knowledge and skills in digital preservation.”
